The English Football Association decided to take strong action against both Chelsea and Tottenham, when players from both sides lost control. A total of 12 yellow cards were shown by referee Mark Clattenburg at Stamford Bridge, not counting other collisions he did not observe. The British media called this "The Battle of the Bridge".
Accordingly, the two teams were penalized for three chaotic situations: in the 45th minute, 87th minute and at the end of the match. At the end of the first half, Danny Rose and Willian had a slight collision. In the 87th minute, there was a scuffle between Eden Hazard and Eric Dyer, causing players from both sides to intervene. And at the end of the match, when entering the tunnel, players and coaching staff from both sides clashed, to the point that coach Guus Hiddink was pushed to the ground.
In addition, Mousa Dembele was also charged with violent conduct when he gouged Diego Costa's eye. The FA considered this offense to be more serious than usual. "The basic penalty of a three-match ban for this behavior is clearly insufficient," the FA statement said. The Tottenham midfielder could be banned for 10 matches if found guilty.
Dembele has until May 5 to appeal. Chelsea and Tottenham have until next Monday to explain.
