Quynh Lien Commune and Quynh Xuan Ward are two localities with a large number of handmade tile kilns with over 50 kilns, built since the 1980s and strongly developed in the 1990s. The handmade tile kilns have regularly created jobs for hundreds of local workers.
Before 2010, tile-producing households contributed to the commune and ward budgets and supplied a large amount of tiles to the market. Therefore, when initially receiving the policy to eliminate the operation of these tile kilns due to the level of environmental pollution, tile-producing households did not comply.

Faced with that situation, the sectors and localities have established steering committees and propaganda teams, organized work with tile production households, announced documents of the State and town on the elimination of manual tile kilns; strictly prohibited the transportation of raw materials for tile production into Quynh Lien commune and Quynh Xuan ward.
At the same time, inspection teams were established, records were drawn up of fines for households that deliberately did not comply, and documents were signed to commit to self-destruction. The demolition was also carried out according to a schedule, creating conditions for households to have time to arrange their work reasonably.

Mr. Ho Phi Trieu - Vice Chairman of Hoang Mai Town People's Committee said: Up to now, 100% of the manual tile kilns in the town have been voluntarily eliminated by the production households. In the coming time, the town will continue to strengthen management and supervision so that the tile kilns do not resume operation.
However, for households producing handmade tile kilns, people still have many concerns because after giving up the job that has been the main source of income for decades, many households have not been able to change their careers. Only a few households have switched to producing shell bricks for construction projects or growing vegetables. Most of the workers either work far away or are unemployed.
People hope that the town will create conditions for workers to receive vocational training, preferential loans to change careers, and soon stabilize their lives.
