Done: Man City strengthens midfield with 60 million euro "blockbuster"
Man City have completed the signing of midfielder Nico Gonzalez from Porto for a €60m release clause.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the information and said that Gonzalez has been allowed by Porto to go to England for a medical and complete the procedures before the January 2025 transfer window closes.
The 23-year-old, who can play both as a number 6 and as a number 8, is a perfect fit for Pep Guardiola, who is short on midfield talent following Rodri's injury. City considered a number of options, including Juventus' Douglas Luiz, before deciding to sign Gonzalez. With their financial resources at their disposal, the Blues were quick to agree a deal with Porto and secure the player they wanted.
Nico Gonzalez came through Barcelona's La Masia youth system and made 37 appearances for the club's first team before moving on loan to Valencia and then to Porto. Under the terms of the deal between Barca and Porto, the Catalans will receive 40% of the proceeds Porto receive from Gonzalez's sale, as part of a deal that will see Porto pay €8.5m to sign Gonzalez in the summer of 2023.
Nico Gonzalez is Man City's fifth signing of the winter transfer window. Previously, Man City recruited central defenders Vitor Reis, Juma Bah and Abdukodir Khusanov, along with striker Omar Marmoush. The recruitment of Nico Gonzalez clearly shows Man City's ambition to strengthen and aim for major titles in the upcoming season.
