(Baonghean.vn) - Chili farmers in Dien Chau district (Nghe An) are struggling with the situation of hot chili peppers falling in price after a bumper crop. According to many households, the price of each kg of chili used to be 40,000 VND, but now it is only 5,000 VND/kg.

Mr. Pham Ngu in Hamlet 1, Dien Ky Commune (Dien Chau) said: "My family rented land from local people to grow 6 hectares of chili (4 hectares in Dien Thap Commune, 2 hectares in Dien Ky Commune). This year's chili crop was good, reaching about 2.5 tons/sao. Before Tet, the price of chili was very high, over 40,000 VND/kg, but after the third lunar month, the price suddenly dropped dramatically, to only 5,000 VND/kg."

In the same situation, in Dien Phong commune, many chili growers are "heartbroken" because the price of chili has "plummeted". Mr. Tran Van Hanh - Chairman of the HTQ Agricultural Cooperative in Dien Phong commune shared: The cooperative has 70 farming households growing over 10 hectares of chili, the output is purchased by a company in Thanh Hoa but with the condition that the purchase price depends on the market at each time. Therefore, at the present time, the price is low, everyone is heartbroken...

According to farmers, growing chili costs at least 4 million VND/sao of hot chili; including seeds, pesticides, and care, while the price of chili is only 5,000 VND/kg, which means a heavy loss.

Mr. Le The Hieu - Head of the Department of Agriculture of Dien Chau district added that the whole district has over 30 hectares of hot chili concentrated in the communes of Dien Phong, Dien Ky, Dien Thap... In the coming time, the Department of Agriculture recommends that people do not expand the planting area, and instructs the communes to plant in a spread-out manner. Because there are many times during the year when hot chili prices increase, avoiding the situation of harvesting at the same time in the summer like now when prices are low.
