The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has just reported to Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai on the temporary purchase and storage of one million tons of paddy rice during this year's Winter-Spring crop. The temporary purchase period is from February 20th to March 31st.

Since the average cost of rice in the Winter-Spring crop is 3,616 VND/kg (as announced by the Ministry of Finance), the target purchase price to ensure farmers make a profit of at least 30% is 4,700 VND/kg.

Currently, the price of dried paddy rice at warehouses in the Mekong Delta region ranges from 5,100 – 5,200 VND/kg for regular varieties and 5,300 – 5,400 VND/kg for long-grain varieties.

The price of raw rice for producing 5% broken rice is currently around 6,900 – 7,000 VND/kg depending on the locality, while the price of raw rice for producing 25% broken rice is 6,600 – 6,700 VND/kg depending on quality and location.

The price of finished rice with 5% broken grains (unpackaged) in the region is currently around 7,800 – 7,900 VND/kg, rice with 15% broken grains is 7,400 – 7,500 VND/kg, and rice with 25% broken grains is around 7,000 – 7,100 VND/kg, depending on quality and location.

It is projected that Vietnam will export approximately 400,000 tons in February 2013, about 600,000 tons in March 2013, and around 7.5-7.6 million tons for the whole year of 2013.
