Rice exports increase sharply, will surpass 2016

From the beginning of the year to December 15, 2017, rice exports have far exceeded the results of 2016, reaching a value of nearly 2.6 billion USD, with a volume of 5.66 million tons.

Updated data from the General Department of Customs shows that from the beginning of the year to December 15, 2017, the country's rice export volume reached 5.66 million tons, worth nearly 2.6 billion USD.

Meanwhile, in the same period last year, the export volume reached 4.68 million tons and the value was 2.1 billion USD. And in the whole year of 2016, rice export only reached 4.9 million tons and the value was 2.2 billion USD.

Thus, compared to the same period last year, the volume of rice exports this year increased by 20.9%, while the value increased by 23.8%. Up to now, both the volume and value of rice exports have exceeded last year.

It can be seen that this is a breakthrough of our country's rice industry. Notably, there is a strong growth in value instead of export volume as before. The structure of exported rice also continues to have a positive shift with a sharp decrease in the mid-range and low-grade rice segment; a sharp increase in high-grade rice, with high quality and value.

At the 9th International Rice Trade Conference 2017 recently held in Macau (China), Vietnam's ST24 rice was in the Top, ranked 2nd out of 3 best rice varieties in the world.

Currently, Vietnamese rice has been exported to 132 markets around the world. Of which, China is the largest market, accounting for about 40% of the total rice export volume. Followed by the Philippines, Malaysia, Ghana, ASEAN…

Furthermore, the export price of our country’s rice increased from 50 to 100 USD, to more than 470 USD/ton of rice depending on the type. This positive change in value this year is the highest in the past 5 years.

Analysts predict that with positive market signals, Vietnam's rice export volume in 2017 could reach 6 million tons, with a value that could reach and exceed 2.6 billion USD.
