Always remembered as one of the most outstanding revolutionaries of the 20th century, leader Fidel Castro is also a very friendly person in the eyes of the people in the suburb of Jaimanitas.
Locals here said that one of the last requests of leader Fidel Castro was to build a soccer field for children in the Jaimanitas area, where he often visited to chat with the people.
When Reuters reporters asked two women in Jaimanitas about their memories of Fidel Castro, they burst into tears. One woman said that on November 9, Fidel Castro stopped his car in the area to greet children playing soccer in the street. “Isn’t there anywhere else to play soccer besides the streets?” he asked.
The following day, an area in Jaimanitas was cleared to prepare for the construction of a football field.
“I spoke to Fidel Castro a month ago,” said 13-year-old Yossiel Calvo. “He said he would build us a soccer field, and he did. The construction is ongoing.”
In an interview with Reuters with neighbors in the area where leader Fidel Castro lived, a retired telecommunications worker named Miriam LaValle, 62, shared that building a soccer field for children seemed to be the beloved leader's last request.
“And the stadium is almost finished,” said Miriam LaValle. “Fidel Castro is a man of his word.”
