Ukraine conflict could destroy the EU
(Baonghean.vn) - Mr. Josep Borrell, the top diplomat of the European Union (EU), emphasized the serious consequences that could happen to the EU if the bloc fails to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict as well as the ongoing Middle East crisis.
At a geopolitical conference organized by Le Grand Continent magazine, Mr. Borrell noted the urgency of the Israel-Hamas conflict, but considered the hostilities between Moscow and Kiev as “the most serious existential threat we are facing.”
Describing Russia as a “power in search of its identity”, Borrell warned that its actions against Kiev posed a significant threat not only to Ukraine but to the whole of Europe. Borrell stressed that European policymakers should not focus on whether Russia would win the conflict but on what action to take to prevent such an outcome. However, the top EU official acknowledged that some EU members did not see Russia as a “strategic threat” but refrained from speculating about possible divisions within the bloc over the Ukraine conflict.
Highlighting the global divide in views on the hostilities between Russia and Ukraine, Borrell noted that while many countries condemn the invasion of a neighboring country, their primary concern is to end the war quickly due to the unbearable consequences. “Yes, they say that invading your neighbor is bad… But they stop there and ask us to end this war as soon as possible. Why? Because they cannot bear the consequences of the war,” he explained.
Russia has consistently said it has no intention of launching an attack on NATO, the US-led military alliance that includes many EU member states. Moscow insists it has no fundamental disputes with the alliance. But Russian officials have been highly critical of Western military support for Kiev, warning that it only prolongs the conflict and draws the West directly into hostilities.
