Around the cancellation of the 6th grade entrance exam: Don't let pressure 'stack' on pressure

Instead of entrance exams or selection, from this school year, the only method of admission to grade 6 is selection. This can have a big impact on many students and many schools, especially those that have long been considered specialized schools in the localities.

Worry when plans change

In Nghe An, for a long time, the admission to grade 6 has been mostly conducted by the selection method with general education students in wards and communes.

However, in each locality, each district, city and town has 1 school considered a specialized school such as Dang Thai Mai Secondary School (Vinh city), Dang Chanh Ky Secondary School (Nam Dan), Ly Nhat Quang Secondary School (Do Luong), Ho Xuan Huong Secondary School (Quynh Luu), Ton Quang Phiet Secondary School (Thanh Chuong), Tra Lan Secondary School (Con Cuong)...

For many years now, these schools have had more applications than the assigned quota, so they have organized entrance exams with tests to assess their abilities.

As a parent whose child is studying in grade 5 at Hung Dung 1 Primary School, before the information that there will be no entrance exam for grade 5, Mr. Tran Van Ha (Hung Dung ward - Vinh city) said: My family set a goal for my child to take the exam to enter Dang Thai Mai Secondary School, because this is the school with the best quality in Vinh city.

To prepare for this exam, the family has invested for many years, so they really want the school to organize the exam so that the children can compete fairly.

Meanwhile, if the entrance exam is eliminated and replaced by a review method, it will lead to other "consequences", making many parents and students passive in the preparation process.

Parent Nguyen Thi Hong - Vinh Tan Ward said: If we only consider admission based on academic results, there will be thousands of applications with excellent academic records. Thus, if any student has additional criteria, they will have advantages such as participating in playgrounds and competitions organized by the Education sector.

Delegating autonomy to localities

Regarding the implementation of the entrance exam for grade 6 according to the new guidelines, there are currently many conflicting opinions. Some opinions say that eliminating the exam will help reduce pressure on students.

At Hung Dung 1 Primary School, teacher Tran Thi Quynh Hoa - Vice Principal of the school also said that when the Ministry made a change, it meant that there was consideration and research from reality.

In her personal opinion, according to teacher Quynh Hoa, organizing the entrance exam for grade 6 will create pressure for students. On the contrary, creating exams will be the basis for selecting students with real ability.

Personally, I hope that in order to achieve the above two goals, the ministry needs to soon come up with alternative solutions to both reduce pressure on students and ensure quality admission.

In her management role, Ms. Hoang Phuong Thao - Head of the Department of Education and Training of Vinh City said that the plan of not organizing entrance exams is "not suitable for reality": Previously, we could implement the entrance exam or admission method depending on the specific characteristics of each school.

Meanwhile, if we conduct admissions, regardless of the criteria, it will create pressure for students and lead to a race for academic records, other certificates... because if we only consider one criterion, it will be very difficult and many different criteria will be needed.

However, if the selection is done by examination, ensuring fairness is something that needs to be considered.

After many years of organizing admission to grade 6 with many forms such as entrance exams, ability tests and admission, teacher Nguyen Thi Hong Kien - Principal of Ly Nhat Quang Secondary School (Do Luong) said: Our school has had 3 years of entrance examinations and compared to previous years of examinations, the quality is quite similar. However, to make admissions objectively and accurately, we must provide an appropriate scoring scale.

In our district, in addition to basing on the report card scores and the final exam scores of the second semester of grade 5 students, we also base on additional criteria from the playgrounds of school age. However, the scoring will depend on each different competition.

Any competitions organized by the district or department that ensure quality will have high scores. Any competitions that are mass-produced and do not have much basis for assessing reliability will have lower scores to ensure the rights of students.

From these difficulties, Ms. Hoang Phuong Thao - Head of the Department of Education and Training of Vinh city also said that in education, there needs to be mass quality education and standard knowledge training.

In addition, it is also necessary to pay attention to the quality of the spearhead, training talents according to the inclination of each student, including students who are inclined towards cultural subjects, and differentiating according to each subject. Therefore, to recruit quality and ensure "the Ministry must give autonomy to localities to suit the reality".

Regarding the changes in the 6th grade entrance exam, answering a number of press agencies today, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Thanh, Director of the Department of Secondary Education, Ministry of Education and Training said that since 2014, the Ministry has regulated junior high school admissions in the form of examinations. This regulation ensures convenient and practical admissions for the level of education that requires 100% of students to attend school. However, by 2018, in the face of the fact that some prestigious junior high schools with a large number of students enrolled in them have not met the general criteria for admission, the Ministry has allowed these schools to combine admissions with testing and assessing students' abilities. However, in reality, some schools have recruited students as an exam.

Regarding the newly issued Circular 30, Mr. Thanh said: Circular 30 stipulates that the method of admission to secondary schools is by examination. Therefore, the Departments of Education and Training must develop a set of criteria, applicable to all schools; at the same time, there must be separate criteria for schools with a large number of candidates registering and meeting the general requirements more than the quota. In addition to the criteria in the admission application, schools can directly evaluate students in many forms such as: question-answer, writing, presentation, practice, experiment, academic records, student activity products, or testing and evaluating capacity.
