Previously, on May 31, Tran Dinh Thinh was sentenced to death by the People's Court of Quang Tri province for the crime of "Murder". After that, Thinh appealed for a lighter sentence to support his elderly mother and raise his young children.
According to the indictment at the first instance trial, in July 2015, while working in China, Thinh heard that his wife, Quach Thi Thom, 31 years old, was having an affair with Tran Van Lai, 40 years old, residing in Tan Xuan village, Gio Viet commune, Gio Linh district, so he returned to Vietnam to talk to his wife. Thom admitted the incident, so Thinh beat her and sent her back to her hometown in Thanh Hoa. After Thom apologized, Thinh forgave her and took her to Binh Duong to start over.
On August 19, Thinh took Thom to a motel in Binh Duong for questioning. Thom admitted that she was pregnant with Lai and had an abortion. Thinh was sad but continued to ignore it once more. However, Thinh later discovered that Thom contacted Lai with a text message: "If Thinh leaves me, will you go with me?" Unable to keep his composure, Thinh stabbed his wife to death in the motel. After that, Thinh went to Quang Tri, waited until nightfall, then went to Lai's house and hacked him to death while he was sleeping with his wife on the evening of August 20, 2015.
