Death sentence upheld for husband who traveled thousands of kilometers to kill his wife and her lover.
After considering the circumstances, the court rejected Tran Dinh Thinh's appeal and upheld the death sentence.
On the morning of October 19th, at the Quang Tri Provincial People's Court, the Da Nang High People's Court opened the appellate trial of defendant Tran Dinh Thinh, 29 years old, residing in Moc Duc village, Cam Hieu commune, Cam Lo district, Quang Tri province, the husband who traveled over a thousand kilometers to kill his wife and her lover out of jealousy.

Previously, on May 31st, Tran Dinh Thinh was sentenced to death by the Quang Tri Provincial People's Court for the crime of "murder". Thinh subsequently filed an appeal requesting a reduced sentence so he could care for his elderly mother and raise his young child.
According to the indictment at the first-instance trial, in July 2015, while working in China, Thinh heard that his wife, Quach Thi Thom, 31 years old, was having an affair with Tran Van Lai, 40 years old, residing in Tan Xuan village, Gio Viet commune, Gio Linh district. Thinh returned to Vietnam to confront his wife. Thom admitted to the affair, so Thinh beat her, causing her to leave and return to her maternal hometown in Thanh Hoa. After Thom apologized, Thinh forgave her and brought her to Binh Duong to start over.
On August 19th, Thinh took Thom to a motel in Binh Duong to question her, and Thom admitted to being pregnant with Lai's child and having an abortion. Thinh was upset but forgave her again. However, he later discovered Thom contacting Lai with a message: "If Thinh leaves me, will you go with me?" Unable to control his anger, Thinh stabbed his wife to death in the motel. Afterward, Thinh went to Quang Tri, waited until nightfall, and then went to Lai's house and killed him while he was sleeping with his wife on the night of August 20th, 2015.

At this appeal hearing, the families of both victims were absent. Previously, representatives from both families had submitted petitions requesting leniency for Tran Dinh Thinh. However, after considering the circumstances, the High People's Court in Da Nang decided to reject Tran Dinh Thinh's appeal and uphold the death sentence.
