Death sentence for drug smuggler
(Baonghean.vn) -Having no job but still wanting to have money to spend, Mua Ba Tu agreed to join a drug trafficking ring for a Laotian boss to Nghe An through illegal channels.
On the afternoon of August 22, in Vinh city, the Supreme People's Court upheld the death sentence for Mua Ba Tu (28 years old), permanent resident of Na Ngoi commune, Ky Son district, for the crime of Illegally transporting drugs.

According to the first instance verdict, Mua Ba Tu was born in Ky Son district, his parents passed away early, Tu was taken care of by a relative. When he grew up, Tu's whole family moved to Kham Cot district, Bolikhamxay province, Laos to settle down. Here, Tu had no job so he agreed to work for a Lao boss. Tu's task was to carry packages from the Lao border to Vietnam through unofficial routes. For each successful shipment, Tu was paid handsomely by the boss.
When he learned that the packages brought from Laos to Vietnam through illegal routes were heroin, Tu intended to quit his job, but because he was afraid of being killed, he continued to carry drugs for hire and became an important link in the drug ring from Laos to Vietnam through the Nghe An border area.
This line was targeted by the anti-drug force and the Nghe An Border Guard, and a special project was set up to fight it. On the night of July 18, 2012, when Mua Ba Tu was "carrying" 22 heroin cakes and 12,000 synthetic drug pills into the border forest area of Thanh Thuy commune, Thanh Chuong district, he was caught red-handed by the border guard. Tu confessed that a Laotian boss hired him to transport the drugs to Vietnam for 20 million VND.
On December 26, 2012, the People's Court of Nghe An province held a first-instance trial and sentenced Mua Ba Tu to death. Believing that the sentence was too harsh, Tu appealed to the Supreme People's Court, asking for a reduction of his sentence, but was unsuccessful.
