(Baonghean.vn) - For Catholics, the patron saint's feast day is one of the most memorable holidays. It is also an opportunity for friends and groups to meet and share joy with each other.

A patron saint (also known as a patron or protective saint; Latin: patronus) is a saint believed to protect, guide, and intercede for a person, a place, a country, or even an event. This title is common in the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church.

The tradition of choosing a patron saint is common in many cities and countries in Europe. Typically, the patron saint chosen is someone who was born in or actively involved in the local area. In Latin America, when Spanish and Portuguese explorers first set foot on a particular land, they often named that land after the saint whose feast day was celebrated that day.

The selection of a patron saint for a country or city may be by government recognition (in countries with a Catholic tradition) or solely by the Catholic Church in that country. Patron saints of professions are chosen from saints whose professions or miracles are related to those professions.

Choosing a date to celebrate the patron saint's feast day is not random but depends on the spirituality and overall spirit of each organization. On this day, a special Mass is celebrated specifically for the group, followed by a ceremony to welcome new members, participation in charitable work in the parish, and finally, a gathering filled with fraternal love.

The celebration of the liturgy is reserved only for patron saints officially approved by the Holy See, or those whose selection has been long established. Furthermore, the selection of a patron saint, in a broader sense, is a devotional act and does not entail the liturgical privileges typically associated with such cases.

The patron saint of a diocese, region, country, or large territory, a place, or a province of a religious order is celebrated with a feast day. However, for important pastoral reasons, it may be celebrated with a solemnity.

The monks have their own liturgical calendar, and they also celebrate the feast of the patron saint of the region where they live.

Religious orders may celebrate with solemnity two of their patron saint's feast days, title feasts, or founder's feast days.
