Farmers in Yen Thanh district are preparing to harvest the 2017 spring rice crop. One of the key concerns for Yen Thanh district is ensuring security and order during the rice harvest, creating favorable conditions for farmers to harvest their crops smoothly.

Mr. Nguyen Vuong Ngoc, Vice Chairman of the District People's Committee, said: In early May, the District People's Committee issued document No. 460/UBND.NN on ensuring security during the 2017 spring rice harvest. Accordingly, the District People's Committee assigned communes to propagate, mobilize, and advise people to apply mechanization in rice harvesting, speed up the harvesting process, and free up land for planting the autumn crop.

Agricultural cooperatives, based on the area and rice varieties of each hamlet, sign contracts with machine owners according to specific harvesting locations and appropriate prices, harvesting the entire area and preventing unhealthy competition among machine owners.

The district police will assign officers to monitor the area, coordinate with the police in communes and towns, gather information, and if they detect any instances of "protection rackets" in rice harvesting and land preparation, they will take action according to the law.

According to Mr. Nguyen Xuan Trieu, Director of Hoa Thanh Agricultural Cooperative in Hoa Thanh commune (Yen Thanh district), following the direction of the District People's Committee and based on the commune's rice area of nearly 200 hectares, the cooperative has contracted with 13 combine harvester owners from Ha Nam, Nam Dinh, and Thai Binh provinces to harvest rice for the local people. According to the contract, before bringing the machines to the area, the owners pay 1.5 million VND to the cooperative for repairs to bridges, culverts, and internal field roads after harvest, and a deposit of 3 million VND per machine (the cooperative will return the deposit to the machine owners after the harvest is completed). Accordingly, the machine owners are responsible for harvesting the entire rice crop; the agreed price for harvesting rice is 160,000 VND per sao (a unit of land measurement) for dry fields and 180,000 VND per sao for deep fields.

This spring, Yen Thanh district has over 12,800 hectares of rice fields, with an expected average yield of nearly 70 quintals/hectare. From May 10th, farmers in Yen Thanh will begin harvesting their rice crops on a large scale.
