In a small house nestled on the hillside in Hamlet 3, Cat Van Commune, Mr. Ty shared his story: After returning to his hometown after his military service, he actively participated in cultural and artistic activities in the village and district. To satisfy his passion, he independently researched and learned how to perform each folk melody, how to rhyme in each folk song and verse, to compose works for cultural and artistic activities as well as local propaganda work. More than 50 folk songs have been created, such as the song "Complete Love Song of Folk Songs" praising the revolutionary traditions of Cat Ngan (Thanh Chuong); the duet "The Sea on One Side and You on the Other"; the song "Preserving the Homeland's Sea and Islands" reflecting the determination of every Vietnamese citizen to protect the homeland's sea and islands... all stemming from his passion and the responsibility of a citizen to disseminate the policies of the Party and State to the people. His songs are imbued with the essence of life, topicality, and a practical connection to the people... Therefore, they are easy to remember, easy to learn, and easily resonate with people.
Deeply devoted to folk melodies, he has always been concerned about how to preserve and promote the invaluable cultural heritage left by his ancestors. In 2011, he and Mr. Gian Tu Duat (now the Chairman of the Cat Van Folk Song Club) were pioneers in proposing the idea of establishing the Cat Van Folk Song Club (Thanh Chuong). Initially, the club had only 7 members, but now it has attracted 20 active participants. To maintain the club's activities, he mobilizes club members and friends to contribute funds and purchase props for practice. The club not only attracts older members but also many young children and high school students. Artists like him tirelessly pass on the melodies and love of folk songs to the younger generation with all their passion and dedication. “I have finally relieved myself of a long-standing worry about not finding a successor generation to preserve and promote the value of our homeland's folk songs. Through this recent competition, I am very happy and proud of the young generation. They performed the folk melodies of their ancestors very well. Introducing folk songs into schools is truly a correct and timely policy,” he confided.
The Chairman of the People's Committee of Cat Van Commune, Gian Tu Ngo, highly praised Mr. Chu Van Ty's contributions to the commune's cultural and artistic movement: "The folk songs composed by Mr. Ty are highly topical and easily resonate with people, thus greatly supporting the dissemination of the Party and State's guidelines, policies, and laws to the people. For example, the skit 'Helmets' promotes traffic safety; the humorous short play 'The Joy of Renewal' reflects the policy of building new rural areas..."
Not only did he win the unanimous support of the club members, but he was also fortunate to have a supportive wife who always helped him. His wife, Le Thi Duyen, said: "Even at nearly 70 years old, rain or shine, day or night, he has never missed a club meeting. Seeing him participate in village and commune activities makes me very happy and healthy, so I wholeheartedly support him." With the encouragement of his devoted wife, at 70, he continues to diligently fulfill his responsibilities as Vice Chairman of the Cat Van Folk Song Club, enthusiastically composing and maintaining the club's activities. Having dedicated his life to the folk songs of Nghe An province, he is deeply pleased and happy that the Nghe Tinh folk songs have been nominated for UNESCO recognition as a cultural heritage of humanity. He understands that "the more you love your country, the more you cherish its folk songs." With a deep love for the simple yet profound melodies of folk songs, Mr. Ty has contributed to preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of his homeland through concrete actions.
