ZCY-23-M4, also known as 23mm self-propelled anti-aircraft gun produced by the Soviet Union, is a powerful weapon of the Vietnam Air Defense force in coordinated operations to protect the Fatherland's sky, protect targets on the ground, and protect the marching formations of combined arms forces.

When fired, this weapon is likened to a “cluster of fire needles”, able to destroy and defeat the enemy in the blink of an eye. Basically, this weapon consists of a 4-barreled anti-aircraft gun mounted on a tracked vehicle.

In addition, the vehicle also has a radar system that can detect airborne targets up to 12km away and effectively track targets within a range of 10km; navigation devices; day and night observation equipment; aiming equipment; communication equipment; nuclear defense and decontamination equipment...

This is a weapon with many outstanding features, such as high maneuverability in many different types of terrain. The vehicle can climb slopes under 30 degrees or travel in road conditions with slopes under 10 degrees. The vehicle can cross a 1m deep, 2.5m wide hole and overcome obstacles 1m high.

If marching on asphalt roads, the speed of the ZCY-23-M4 can reach 50km/h; when marching on dirt roads, the speed can reach 30km/h. The vehicle can move and shoot effectively at speeds under 35km/h on flat terrain and under 20km/h on field terrain.

The 23mm gun mounted on the vehicle has 4 barrels. The gun barrel can be controlled to create a firing angle of up to 85 degrees compared to the horizontal plane and can rotate 360 ​​degrees. The gun has a maximum rate of fire of 3,400 rounds/minute. This type of gun is capable of destroying targets in the air, and can also destroy targets on the ground and water at a distance of about 2,000m.

Ready to fight

To achieve the highest combat readiness, Lieutenant Colonel Le Cong Thanh, Deputy Division Commander of Division 361, shared with the Air Defense - Air Force newspaper: "We have directed the units to organize live-fire training in 2016 through 4 phases. The shooting squads have completed phase 1, which was a 1-week field exercise at Mieu Mon Shooting Range.

Up to now, each gunner has mastered the tasks according to his duties, weapon theory, combat work, skillfully operated technical weapons, mastered the rules of shooting, methods of identifying elements; mastered individual operations, combat coordination, handled well situations in combat preparation, searched for and closely followed the target combined with pulling the trigger, the process of receiving and handing over weapons and equipment. In general, the battery teams have achieved good results, are stable and solid.

Inspecting Battalion 5, Lieutenant Colonel Thanh was quite satisfied after witnessing the unit's training from segment to synthesis, smoothly combining the M-96CT target shooting process, from individual movements to the vehicle crew's proficient use of the training machine.

Close coordination between gunners in the vehicle crew, between vehicles and companies, mastering shooting rules, methods, identifying elements, choosing the right time to shoot and destroy the target.
