There are many ways to check the quality of the products we eat every day. We will introduce some easy and quick ways to check.
Chicken:Look for white stripes and a thick layer of fat on the chicken breast. This means that the farmer has injected the poultry with growth hormones, causing them to gain weight too quickly. This meat is not good for your health. The color is also very important: yellow meat is often not fresh. Chicken breast should be pink and not too soft. |
Cheese:A drop of iodine will help you test if the cheese contains starch. If it does, the stain will turn dark blue, and if it doesn't, the color will remain yellow or brown. Also, leave the cheese at room temperature. If it contains vegetable fat, it will turn yellow. This test indicates that the fresh cheese may taste sour but will not change color. |
Honey:Pour some honey onto a surface. Fake honey will spread out immediately. Good quality honey will be thick, viscous, and runny. If you taste a caramel flavor, it means your honey has been heated. If you taste excessive sweetness, it means it contains white sugar. |
Sour cream:To test if sour cream contains vegetable fat, stir a spoonful of sour cream into a cup of hot water. A poor quality product will produce white flakes. Real sour cream will become a thick, runny liquid. |
Vegetables, fruits and frozen foods:Check to see if a package of frozen food has frost or ice in it. If so, the food has not been stored properly. |
Fish:Fresh fish eyes will be bulging and transparent, the cornea will be elastic. Spoiled fish eyes will be sunken into the eye socket, cloudy in color, and the cornea will be wrinkled or torn. Fresh fish scales will be shiny, tightly attached to the fish body, without mucus, and will not have a foul odor. Spoiled fish fins will be dull, not shiny, will easily peel off the fish body, and will have an odor. |
Meat:When choosing meat, press your finger into it. If the meat is fresh, it will be elastic enough to make your fingerprint disappear. Cut a large piece: If the meat is dark but has a white border, it means it has been treated with additives. You can also test it by blotting it with a paper towel; fresh meat should not leave too much moisture and blood on the paper towel. |
Vegetables:Hold a bunch of lettuce in your hand (as shown). If the leaves droop down to the sides, the lettuce is wilted. Also, if the leaves are too dark and the stems are too long, it may contain nitrates. Fresh lettuce is always naturally green. |
Cheese:You can easily tell if a cheese has vegetable fat or not. It will dry out and crumble after you cut it (not the case with hard cheeses). Leave some cheese at room temperature, if it dries out and moisture appears in the packaging, it is best to throw it away. |
Cream:Leave your favorite ice cream at room temperature. If it contains vegetable fat, it will take longer to cool and eventually melt into a liquid. Ice cream with good ingredients will melt into a thick white cream. |
