Here are a few tips to guide you through what to do before drinking, while drinking, and the morning after, to help you avoid a hangover.
A. Before drinking
Drink lots of water

Drinking plenty of water will not only help you wake up refreshed the next morning, but it can also help you avoid dehydration before you start drinking. Drinking alcohol will hinder the production of a hormone called vasopressin. Drinking alcohol will cause the kidneys to send water directly to the bladder, instead of absorbing it into the body.
In fact, drinking alcohol also means that you will excrete 4 times more water than drinking normal water. Therefore, it can cause your body to become dehydrated. Dehydration is the main cause of headaches and dry mouth the next morning. Therefore, before you start drinking alcohol, you should try to drink a lot of water.
Eat foods high in fat
Food will help slow down the absorption of alcohol. In particular, if you eat fatty foods before drinking, the fat will form in the stomach lining and slow down the rate at which alcohol is absorbed into the bloodstream, which means it will take longer for you to get drunk. You can also drink a glass of milk or a little olive oil, which will have a similar effect.
B. While drinking alcohol
Do not drink many types of alcohol at the same time
Different types of alcohol contain different chemicals in different concentrations. That's why different types of alcohol have different effects on you.
If you drink multiple types of alcohol at once, they can interact and create a very bad situation. By drinking only one type of alcohol, you will minimize the risk of waking up with a terrible headache the next morning.
Drink slowly
It is important to stay calm when drinking. The US National Institutes of Health recommends that men should not drink more than 30-40ml of pure alcohol (equivalent to 3-4 units) in a day.
For women, the recommended amount is 20-30ml of pure alcohol. A pint of beer contains about 20-30ml of pure alcohol, while a glass of wine contains about 15ml of pure alcohol.
It takes your body 1 hour to absorb 10ml of pure alcohol (1 unit), which is why you should not drink too quickly. If you drink too quickly, your body will not have enough time to “process” the alcohol, and thus, lead to unwanted reactions.
You should take a break to allow your body to process the amount of alcohol you have just consumed and reduce your risk of getting drunk.
Drink with carbonated drinks

In a 2013 study, Chinese researchers found that drinking decaffeinated soda helps the body metabolize alcohol better. This is because the soda speeds up the metabolism of aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH). ALDH is thought to be responsible for the symptoms of hangovers. Therefore, drinking carbonated beverages while drinking alcohol may help reduce your hangover.
Always drink water
Alcohol is known to be a diuretic. Therefore, after drinking alcohol and before going to bed, you should drink about 400 – 600ml of water. You can also drink a glass of water with each beer to replace the fluid you lost when drinking alcohol.
C. The next morning
Rest
Sleeping will help your body recover. Sleeping an hour or two longer than usual will help your body recover faster. You may have to cancel all your plans for the next day just to rest. However, if you absolutely must work, you can take an aspirin.
Continue drinking water or fruit juice.
You will continue to drink water, fruit juices or vegetable juices to restore your body. A good restorative drink is lemon juice, mixed in a glass of warm water.

Eat toast or crackers
Toast or crackers are great if you've thrown up the night before. The carbohydrates will help raise your blood sugar the next morning.
Under normal circumstances, when your blood sugar levels drop below normal, your liver triggers the production of more glucose from stored carbohydrates in your body.
However, if you drink too much, your liver will focus on metabolizing alcohol, instead of creating more glucose. As a result, you will have lower blood sugar than normal and will feel tired and irritable the next morning.
Drink coffee and aspirin
In a 2010 study published in the journal PLOS ONE, researchers found that the caffeine in coffee and the anti-inflammatory properties of aspirin counteracted the chemical properties of ethanol (pure alcohol). Ethanol gives you a headache because it contains acetate.
However, you should be careful, because coffee is also a substance that makes you dehydrated. However, coffee will also spike your adrenaline, and give you more energy, in the wrong way. Therefore, you should be careful when taking coffee and painkillers at the same time.
Shower
Taking a cold shower can be refreshing and help you regain your senses. You can also try alternating between hot and cold showers. However, you should be careful when doing so as it can cause heat shock and damage to your body.
Practice
The endorphins released during exercise will improve your mood. Exercise will also help you burn off the extra calories you take in from drinking. However, you should make sure you drink enough water while exercising to avoid becoming more dehydrated.
It takes a lot of motivation to work out after a night of heavy drinking, but it will definitely make you feel better, both physically and mentally.
