The results of a survey of UN member states released on May 16 showed that although the resolution has not been drafted and there have only been preliminary contacts to prepare for the vote on the resolution, so far, 130 out of 192 UN member states have expressed their support for the UN General Assembly resolution on the establishment of the State of Palestine at the vote at the UN General Assembly in September this year.

This number would increase to 170 countries if the resolution were drafted in a moderate manner.

In December 2008, the United Nations General Assembly approved the Palestinian right to establish a State and at that time 104 countries supported the UN General Assembly resolution recognizing this right of the Palestinian people.

Following recent recognition by France, Spain, Portugal, Ireland and many other European countries, on May 16 the Palestinian Authority achieved an important diplomatic victory when Italian President Giorgio Napolitano announced the elevation of the Palestinian representative in Rome to ambassadorial level to fully perform the functions of a diplomatic mission of a country.

In January 2011, the Palestinian Authority also won recognition of the State of Palestine from many Latin American countries.
