According to Chile's meteorological agency, the temperature dropped to -6.1 degrees Celsius in the early morning of July 8, a record low in recent winters in this South American country. Most of the victims of this unusual cold spell are homeless people.

The Chilean government has opened more than 70 temporary shelters across the country for homeless people, and set up a toll-free hotline so people can help homeless people find safe shelter.

According to official statistics, Chile has about 12,000 homeless people, including 765 children./.
