Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc requestedThe Traffic Safety Committee, ministries, sectors, mass organizations and localities focus on implementing a number of tasks to ensure traffic safety in the last 6 months of the year, including organizing activities to commemorate victims who died in traffic accidents.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Chairman of the National Traffic Safety Committee, requested the Traffic Safety Committee to develop a plan and direct the Traffic Safety Committees of provinces and centrally-run cities to organize activities to "Commemorate victims of traffic accidents" on November 18, 2012.

This activity aims to warn about the consequences and risks of traffic accidents, calling on all people to voluntarily obey the law when participating in traffic.

Talking to reporters of the Government Portal about this issue, Mr. Nguyen Hoang Hiep, Vice Chairman of the National Traffic Safety Committee, said that 10 years ago, the United Nations chose the third Sunday of November every year as the day to commemorate victims of traffic accidents. In Vietnam, in 2011, we only tested it on a small scale in Ho Chi Minh City, and in 2012, it was implemented nationwide.

Mr. Hiep added that it is expected that on November 18, the National Traffic Safety Committee will launch the Traffic Accident Victim Support Fund with the hope of providing a form of support for the unfortunate and families facing difficulties due to traffic accidents.

According to statistics, in the first 6 months of the year, there were 17,886 incidents nationwide, killing 4,953 people and injuring 19,977 people, compared to the same period in 2011, a decrease of 4,931 incidents, 992 fewer deaths, and 5,513 fewer injuries.

Specifically, 44/63 provinces and cities reduced all three criteria (number of accidents, number of deaths, number of injuries); 3 provinces saw the number of deaths due to traffic accidents decrease by 40-50%; 11 provinces saw the number of deaths decrease by 30-40%; 15 provinces saw the number decrease by 20-30%; 12 provinces saw the number decrease by 10-20%...

However, in the first 6 months of 2012, there were also particularly serious road accidents, especially passenger vehicle accidents, causing social outrage; railway traffic accidents were complicated, especially at intersections between residential roads and railways. Some traffic safety violations were still common, such as: speeding violations, encroachment on the road; motorcyclists and motorbike riders not wearing helmets, people driving under the influence of alcohol...
