According to experts, storm No. 3 is likely to reach a maximum level of 14, gusting to level 17 in the northern East Sea. When the storm makes landfall, its circulation will be wide, along the northern and north central provinces.

This evening (September 3), Mr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Head of Weather Forecast Department, National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, gave his comments on the storm.storm no. 3, international name is Yagi.

Specifically, this morning, storm Yagi entered the eastern sea of the North East Sea and became storm number 3 in 2024.

After entering the East Sea, storm No. 3 gradually changed its direction of movement to the West, its speed slowed down and its intensity was assessed to continuously increase.

“The latest information shows that storm No. 3 may reach level 14 intensity, gusting to level 17 when entering the sea off the east coast of Hainan Island (China). Therefore, the risk level of natural disasters caused by storm No. 3 in this sea area has been raised to level 4 by the forecasting center,” Mr. Tuan emphasized.

Mr. Tuan also mentioned some noteworthy points about this storm. That is, this is a very strong storm, continuously increasing in intensity when entering the East Sea. From the time it entered the East Sea until reaching its strongest intensity, the storm increased by 6 levels (from level 8 to level 14).

The range of strong winds of the storm also expands rapidly as the storm intensifies, most clearly shown by the very wide area of influence.

Expert Vu Anh Tuan said that depending on the movement scenario of storm No. 3, there is also a possibility of widespread heavy rain in the northern, northern and central central provinces.

At the same time, strong thunderstorms that occur before the storm hits are also a point to note because thunderstorms are often accompanied by tornadoes and strong gusts of wind.

Commenting on the possibility of storm No. 3 directly affecting the mainland, Mr. Tuan informed that storm No. 3 will move steadily in a westerly direction at an average speed of 10-15km/h until around the morning of September 6. From the afternoon of the same day onwards, there are two possible scenarios.

Specifically,Scenario 1If the storm moves as it is now, it will enter the Gulf of Tonkin around the night of September 6 or September 7, then move towards the mainland of the northern provinces.

Scenario 2, the storm is likely to change direction, moving towards the south of Hainan Island (China) then entering the southern Gulf of Tonkin and heading towards the mainland provinces of the Northern Delta and Thanh Hoa to Thua Thien Hue.

"In both scenarios, the storm will directly affect our mainland," said Mr. Tuan.

According to Mr. Tuan, the impact of storm No. 3, in addition to the strong wind, the 7-9m high waves are a great danger to ships. The storm can even sink large ships.

“Because this is a very strong storm, the possibility of strong winds will cover a large area along the coastal provinces of the North and North Central regions according to the two scenarios mentioned above.

Depending on the movement scenario of storm No. 3, there is also a possibility of widespread heavy rain in the northern, northern and central central provinces. The risk of floods, flash floods and landslides is high to very high,” Mr. Tuan emphasized.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, at 7:00 p.m. on September 3, the eye of the storm was located in the eastern sea of the North East Sea. The strongest wind near the eye of the storm was level 10 (89-102 km/h), gusting to level 12, moving in a West-Northwest direction, at about 10 km/h.

From September 5-6, storm No. 3 may reach very strong storm level in the northern sea area of the North East Sea, with strong winds reaching level 14, gusting to level 17 near the storm's center.
