20 years of Hue Monuments Complex recognized as World Cultural Heritage
According to UNESCO's assessment, the conservation of Hue Monuments is currently moving into a phase of stability and sustainable development.
On the morning of September 22, Thua Thien Hue province held a ceremony to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Hue Monuments Complex being listed by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage; and the 10th anniversary of Vietnamese Royal Court Music being recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Politburo member and Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc attended.
Immediately after the Complex of Hue Monuments was honored as a "World Cultural Heritage", the conservation of Hue Monuments was invested in by Thua Thien Hue province. Up to now, Thua Thien Hue province has invested 600 billion VND to restore 132 typical works such as: Ngo Mon, Thai Hoa Palace, Hien Lam Cac, The Mieu relic cluster...
Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc emphasized: “The 20th anniversary of the Hue Monuments Complex being recognized as a world cultural heritage and the 10th anniversary of Royal Court Music being recognized as an intangible heritage of humanity is a very great event for the people of Thua Thien-Hue in particular and the whole country in general.

The cause of preserving and promoting the values of Hue heritage needs to be further promoted on the basis of the achievements made in the past 20 years, in order to realize the objectives and tasks set out in the plan for preserving and promoting the values of Hue monuments in the period of 2010-2020 approved by the Prime Minister. In addition, it is necessary to develop a comprehensive management plan for Hue heritage sites in accordance with the general planning of the locality, in order to ensure the requirements of harmonious development with the requirements of sustainable conservation.
Currently, the Hue Monuments Conservation Center is exploiting and promoting the tangible and intangible cultural values of the Hue Monuments Complex, creating a source of profit to preserve the monuments, contributing to socio-economic development.
Ticket sales revenue from 1998 to present has reached more than 525 billion VND, making a significant contribution to reinvestment in heritage conservation activities. Research, conservation and promotion of intangible cultural values are also focused on, royal court music, royal dance, royal festivals... are all studied and restored according to the original.
Mr. Phan Thanh Hai, Director of the Hue Monuments Conservation Center, said: “The past 20 years have been a period of great efforts in planning, preserving and promoting the value of Hue monuments. All of these things confirm that Hue heritage sites are being revived and especially preserved in a sustainable manner.”
Also on the morning of September 22, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony to inaugurate the upgrade of Phu Bai Hue International Airport and the upgrade of the Hue City bypass./.
