225 new drugs to be invented and used in the next 5 years

Recently, the IMS Health Monitor released a report: “Global Drug Use 2020: Outlook and Recommendations.”

According to the report, in the next 5 years, 225 new drugs will be invented and put into use, mainly in developed countries.

Some drugs will change the way we treat known cancers, cardiovascular disease, hepatitis C, respiratory diseases, muscle disorders, neglected tropical diseases, immune disorders.

Along with new drugs, technology will have a huge impact on patient care over the next five years, using technology to improve cancer diagnosis, monitor health, and help patients adhere to their doctor’s recommended check-ups.

IMS predicts that a growing number of patients with chronic diseases will access smartphone apps and wearables to track disease signs, physical activity and the effects of treatments.

Future technology is also expected to help insurance companies track patients' health and the costs they spend on medical treatment.

According to IMS, in the next 5 years, global costs for drugs are expected to increase by 3-6% each year.

The organization predicts that global spending on pharmaceuticals will increase by about 30% from the current 1,000 billion USD to 1,300 billion USD in 2020 due to the emergence of new expensive drugs, rising prices, aging populations and the increase in the use of cheap drugs/generic drugs in developing countries./.
