247 months in prison for group intentionally beating people

On October 29, the People's Court of Con Cuong district tried the case of Intentional Infliction of Injury against 10 defendants Lao Cam Huy, Lao Van Bao, Vi Van Linh, Lo Van Dong, Vi Van Thuy, Vi Van Dinh, Lo Van Tuan, Lo Van Tien, Lo Van Tuyen, and Lo Van Phuc. The group of defendants all reside in Chai village, Chi Khe commune, Con Cuong district, of which the two defendants Bao and Huy are minors.

The investigation clarified that on the night of December 30, 2012, a group of young people in Chai village organized a music festival. During the entertainment, the group saw Mr. Pham Huu Tien - residing in Bai Oi village, Chi Khe commune, Con Cuong district, and Mr. Nguyen Duy Nho, a fellow villager, driving a motorbike, so they blocked the road and intended to beat them.

Seeing this, Mr. Tien called his relatives for help. Receiving the call, Mr. Pham Huu Tam, born in 1962, residing in Thuy Khe village, Chi Khe commune, immediately rode his motorbike, holding a wooden stick, to rescue Mr. Tien.

After a while of beating, seeing that the victims had all fainted, the group of young men agreed to return to the Chai village cultural house. Mr. Tam and Mr. Tuan were taken to Vinh city by the locals for emergency treatment.

Many local people were present to watch the trial.

The forensic examination results showed that Mr. Tam suffered 14% disability and Mr. Tuan suffered 25%.

At the trial, the defendants all bowed their heads and admitted their guilt. The jury believed that the defendants were young, were ethnic minorities, and had limited awareness and understanding of the law, so they were entitled to mitigating circumstances according to the regulations. After nearly a day of trial, on the afternoon of October 29, the People's Court of Con Cuong district sentenced the defendants to sentences ranging from 20 months in prison with a suspended sentence to 30 months in prison. The total sentence that the 10 defendants had to serve was 247 months in prison.
