Saving people by registering to donate organs and tissues after death is a noble and humane act, especially when every day in our country there are thousands of patients waiting for organ transplants.
Things to keep in mind when wanting to donate organs
1. The procedure for donating organs and bodies is quite simple. Donors must be 18 years old and have full civil capacity to register. You just need to fill out a voluntary body donation form and sign it with a witness (family member).
2. Most medical facilities across the country can accept organ donation applications. Those who wish to donate organs but have questions can contact the National Coordination Center for Human Organ Transplantation or the coordination unit at Cho Ray Hospital (HCMC)... for answers and advice.
3. Elderly people can also donate part of their tissues and organs (liver, kidney, cornea, etc.) after death or brain death. Never think that you are too old to register to donate organs.
4. Donating body or organs is voluntary, so there will be no specific compensation in cash or kind. The application for organ donation is not legally binding. The person who registered to donate can change his/her mind at any time.
5. A brain-dead person can save dozens of lives. There are more than 18 organs in the body that can be used for transplants to save lives, such as the heart, liver, kidney, lungs, etc.
6. Before performing organ harvesting for transplantation, the medical team will have to carry out strict checks on the donor's physical condition. People with diseases such as HIV, hepatitis, tuberculosis... are not eligible to donate organs.
7. Donation must be done immediately after the donor dies due to an accident or is brain dead. Most internal organs such as the liver, kidneys, heart, etc. can only be preserved for a few hours, to no more than a day.
8. Organs can be donated while alive, including a kidney or part of the liver, without much impact on health. Living organ donors will be given a health insurance card and regular health check-ups completely free of charge.
9. Vietnam currently has about 6,000 people assigned to kidney transplants, 1,500 people needing liver transplants and about 6,000 people waiting for corneal transplants.
10. Organ donation and transplantation are not for commercial purposes. Buying and selling organs such as livers, kidneys, etc. is a violation of Vietnamese and international law.
