Acrylamide

Only discovered 11 years ago in some foods, acrylamide is an extremely dangerous carcinogen that is naturally produced when foods rich in carbohydrates and starches are cooked at temperatures above 248 degrees Celsius. In 2010, the United States' Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization's (WHO) Expert Committee on Food Additives listed acrylamide as a formal concern for human health.

And while the FDA has now issued guidance on how the food industry can prevent acrylamide buildup, organizations like the Center for Science in the Public Interest (PI) want to go further, banning acrylamide in food altogether.

Prevention: Properly handle starchy foods, such as potato chips, which can contain up to 60% acrylamide. When toasting bread, cut it into smaller slices.

Antibiotics

Today, many bacteria are resistant to the drugs doctors prescribe. A whopping 80% of antibiotics are used in farm animal feed to increase productivity. As a result, it is difficult to eliminate superbugs found even in frozen meat in supermarkets. Although the government has tried its best to ban livestock farmers from using high antibiotic feed, people still secretly use it.

Prevention: Choose meat, eggs and other daily foods that do not contain antibiotics. Livestock and poultry farmers do not use growth-promoting foods or foods containing chemicals that are harmful to people's health.

Arsenic

Recent tests have shown that carcinogens and growth hormones are still rampant in products sold in supermarkets and markets, especially arsenic additives. Although arsenic is not added to animal feed, it is still a big problem with foods or pesticides such as rice, fruits, seafood and baby food. Heavy metals destroy brain development, especially in children, infants and fetuses. The government has done everything possible to educate people about the dangers of arsenic, not only in food.

Prevention: Wash food thoroughly before cooking to keep arsenic levels at 30 to 40%. And stay away from products that do not clearly state ingredients or origins. Especially do not use products that are warned to have high arsenic levels.
