If the rate of illegal workers residing in Korea does not decrease, the risk of closing the Vietnamese labor export market to this country is possible.

The Overseas Labor Center (Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs) has just announced a list of 366 Vietnamese workers who did not return home on time, stayed and worked illegally in Korea from May to July 2014.

Mr. Luong Duc Long, Deputy Director of the Overseas Labor Center, said: This list will be provided to authorities to handle administrative violations according to Decree 95 of the Government.

The Overseas Labor Center also noted that workers who have changed their residence status (to E7, G1 visas...) and are legally residing in Korea and are on this list can contact the Vietnam Labor Management Office under the Korean Employment Permit System (EPS) in Korea for guidance on necessary procedures and information correction. This is considered one of the measures to reduce the situation of Vietnamese workers violating contracts, not returning home, and illegally staying in Korea.

According to Mr. Luong Duc Long, if the rate of illegal workers residing in Korea does not decrease, the risk of closing the Vietnamese labor export market to this country is possible and the damage cannot be fully calculated.

The damage is not only to the workers, their families and each locality, because before, every year, Vietnam had tens of thousands of workers going to Korea to work, but now there will be none.

The special Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs and the Ministry of Employment and Labor of the Republic of Korea on December 31, 2013 on sending and receiving Vietnamese workers to work in Korea under the EPS program will be effective for one year. After that, the Ministry of Employment and Labor of the Republic of Korea will review and evaluate the rate of illegal workers residing in Korea as a basis for re-signing the Memorandum of Understanding in early 2015.

However, recently, the Korean Ministry of Employment and Labor has warned that the Korean side can unilaterally cancel the above Memorandum of Understanding at any time, not waiting until the end of November 2014. Because currently, the rate of Vietnamese workers residing illegally in Korea has decreased but is still twice as high as the average rate of 15 countries sending workers to work in Korea under the EPS program./.
