4 years in prison for the leader of the organization that slashed the journalist

On the morning of July 11, Vinh City People's Court opened the first instance trial of defendant Le Van Linh (born in 1971, commonly known as Linh "Cọt", residing in Ha Huy Tap ward, Vinh city, Nghe An province) for the crime of "Intentionally causing injury". Linh is the leader of the organization that slashed journalist Vo Thanh Mai (reporter of Nong nghiep Viet Newspaper).
The People's Court of Vinh City held a trial of Le Van Linh on charges of "Intentionally causing injury" in two consecutive slashing cases that took place from March to May 2011.
In the first case, Le Van Linh and his accomplices used swords to slash Duong Xuan Tuan (15% disability) and Tran Canh Vinh (4.96% disability) at Ly Ly coffee shop on Le Hoan street (Vinh city). In the second case, Linh led the organization of 4 people to slash journalist Vo Thanh Mai atGas station on Le Hong Phong street, Hung Binh ward, Vinh city on May 30, 2011causing Mr. Mai to be injured with a permanent disability rate of 10%.

On July 20, 2011, the subjects who slashed journalist Vo Thanh Mai were arrested one after another. The ringleader Linh Cot escaped and was arrested on February 6, 2013, following a wanted warrant.
Before Linh Cot was arrested, Vinh City People's Court opened a trial for 4 defendants.Le Quoc Hung (20 years old, alias Hung "linh"), Tran Hoai Ky (33 years old, alias Dong "bu"), Nguyen Anh Tu (24 years old, alias Tu "mai"), Vo Thanh Tuan (25 years old, alias Tuan "chuot") all reside in Vinh City, Nghe Anfor the crime of "Intentionally causing injury" andsentenced Nguyen Anh Tu - the person who directly used the knife to slash Mr. Mai - to the highest sentence of 33 months in prison, Tran Hoai Ky to 30 months in prison, Le Quoc Hung to 27 months in prison and Vo Thanh Tuan to 24 months in prison. Regarding civil matters, the defendants must jointly compensate journalist Vo Thanh Mai more than 10 million VND.
At the trial, journalist Vo Thanh Mai asked the jury to clarify the motive and reason why Linh "Cọt" organized the slashing of him because both Mai and Linh "Cọt" affirmed that they had never known each other. Although the presiding judge, the representative of the People's Procuracy, and the People's Jury questioned Linh many times, Linh still evaded and refused to admit his actions. Linh said that he did not know who journalist Vo Thanh Mai was, did not "receive orders" from anyone, did not send anyone to slash journalist Mai and gave compensation to his juniors.
Previously, on February 21, 2012, the Investigation Police Agency of Ha Tinh Province prosecuted the defendant Le Van Linh for the crime of "Illegal trading of narcotics". On May 21, 2012, the Do Luong District Police prosecuted the defendant for the crime of "Intentionally causing injury". In July 1991, the Vinh City People's Court sentenced him to 12 months in prison for the crime of "Theft of property". In September 1992, the Vinh City People's Court sentenced him to 18 months in prison for the crime of "Extortion of property". In April 1997, the Nghe An Province People's Court sentenced him to 24 months in prison for the crime of "Intentionally causing injury". On November 13, 1997, Nghe An Provincial People's Court sentenced him to 5 years in prison for "Illegal possession and use of military weapons". The total sentence of the three sentences above required him to serve four sentences of 9 years and 6 months in prison. He completed his sentence on September 12, 2003.
