The incident occurred at around 4:30 p.m. on April 2 (local time). According to CBS News, among those killed was the shooter, who committed suicide after the incident. However, Fort Hood officials have not yet reached any conclusions.
AFP quoted information posted on Twitter by Fort Hood base as saying: "A shooting has occurred at Fort Hood and there are injuries. All soldiers on the base have been asked to shelter in place."
“At first I heard gunshots. I thought it was a training shooting. Then we realized it was real gunfire,” a witness said.
CBS News quoted several anonymous sources as saying that the shooter was a 34-year-old soldier who, due to disagreements with other soldiers, acted without restraint, causing the shooting.
Upon hearing the news, US President Barack Obama said he was “deeply saddened” by another shooting at Fort Hood, the military base where an Army officer killed 13 people in a shooting in 2009.
“We will get to the bottom of exactly what happened,” Obama said. “We are deeply saddened that something like this could happen again.”
For his part, US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel called the incident “a terrible tragedy”. Mr. Hagel said: “This is a terrible tragedy… At this point we still don’t have enough information. The incident is still under investigation”./.
