Summer is the time for traveling with friends and family. So don't let common ailments stop you from having a great summer.

Migraines and headaches

Migraines and headaches happen all year round, but many women say they suffer from more terrible headaches in the summer. Why? According to Redbook, squinting in the sun, heat gain, and too much UV light are the culprits. Squinting causes facial muscles to tense up, leading to eye strain and possibly a pounding headache. Too much sun and heat loss from the sun can lead to migraines simply because you can’t sweat fast enough to dissipate the heat as your body temperature rises. You’ll also feel nauseous, vomit, and tired if you’re outside for too long.

So how can you prevent these annoying symptoms? It’s simple! Wear sunglasses whenever possible to avoid squinting and headaches. Also, wear plenty of sunscreen and stay indoors or in the shade on sunny days. To prevent dehydration and help your body sweat (which helps you feel cooler), drink plenty of water throughout the day.

Yeast infection

Here’s an infection that’s sure to ruin your beach vacation and keep the ladies from swimming. Yeast infections are common in the summer when women and teens spend more time in wet swimsuits. Yeast thrives in cool, moist places and can also be caused by scented tampons, which can alter the bacteria in the vagina, says Pamela Rockwell, MD, associate professor of medicine at the University of Michigan.

To avoid this uncomfortable and painful infection, change out of your wet bathing suit as soon as possible after swimming, sweating, or playing. Also, wear loose-fitting cotton underwear and avoid mesh or silk, which trap moisture. Also, avoid scented sanitary napkins. If you think you have symptoms of a yeast infection, see a doctor immediately.

Athlete's foot

This isn’t just an infection that affects athletes or teenage boys who are lacking in hygiene. Yeast infections are common in many women during the hot summer months, especially if they regularly play sports or swim in public pools.

This fungus is so contagious that you can get it in just two visits from walking barefoot in a public shower or on the ground near a pool lounger. It grows rapidly in hot, humid environments like public restrooms or even your tennis shoes.

Therefore, to avoid fungal infections while going out, you should always wear shower shoes or flip-flops in public showers, swimming pools or saunas. You should immediately remove your socks and shoes after outdoor activities. In addition, you should avoid wearing plastic shoes because they do not help your feet stay dry.

Food poisoning

Sometimes, just eating a bite of potato salad while picnicking can make your stomach feel warm and fuzzy – you could be suffering from food poisoning! Studies have shown that food poisoning cases are higher in the summer months due to spoiled food. This is because the hot and humid summer months cause food to spoil faster than at any other time of year.

Red meat, dairy-based salads and salads with mayonnaise (such as pasta, potatoes) and poultry can spoil quickly if not prepared shortly before eating or stored in a cool environment. Food poisoning can be fatal if not treated immediately.

To avoid getting sick, keep salads with milk and raw meat refrigerated until you are ready to eat them. If you are going away for a long time, avoid eating anything containing mayonnaise as it spoils quickly. Also, cook food thoroughly to avoid getting sick from undercooked meat.
