5 Things to Do to Start the New Year Healthy
These 5 things are easy to do, inexpensive, and don't require any special equipment, but they work wonders.
Dr. Mitch Shulman, in a conversation with Global News Morning, offered tips to improve your overall health in the new year 2019.
Sleep 8 hours
You should sleep 8 hours a day. This is a way to avoid obesity and depression. A healthy mind after quality sleep will allow you to work more smoothly. Getting enough sleep can also prevent some types of cancer and diseases. If you do not get 8 hours of sleep, you can make up for it at other times of the day when possible.
Quality sleep will help you regain energy quickly. |
Move more
Getting up and moving around more can be something as simple as doing some cardio, but it can have a huge impact on your body. You don’t have to do anything too strenuous, just get up from your seat and walk over to your co-workers instead of sending them an email or calling them. It can also be as simple as parking a little further away so you can walk more. The important thing is to not be lazy.
You don't have to run a marathon to be active; everyday activities are just as important in preventing obesity, cancer and other diseases.
You don't have to run 10km every day, daily activities are also really important in preventing obesity, cancer and other diseases. |
Aim for a rich, nutritious meal
You may hear people talk about diets that are low in fat and carbs. But Dr. Shulman says simple is best. Eat a mix of nuts, greens, and low in salt.

More active and quality communication
Humans are biologically social beings. Many studies have shown that you recover better from illness if you have a close group of friends to share with. According to Dr. Shulman, it's not the quantity of friends that matters, but the quality. You need a few close friends so you can find support when you need it.
A study of people recovering from heart attacks found that those with good networks of friends were more likely to recover.
Enjoy life with friends and minimize the time spent on electronic devices in your free time. |
Living close to nature
You don’t have to walk 20 km a day in the forest or in the mountains, just living with plants and trees can bring you many benefits such as lowering blood pressure and reducing stress. Therefore, whether you are looking at the trees in your garden from your bedroom window or walking your dog in the park, you should try to develop a habit of being in nature on a regular basis.
