5 principles to follow if you want your children to behave properly

From an early age, we begin to learn how to regulate our emotions and control our behavior appropriately.

However, a child's brain is not yet built to understand these things, so you must make sure that the goals you set are important or authentic to your child.

Here are five simple techniques to encourage your child to self-regulate and control himself.

1. Remember that you are your child's number one teacher and they will learn the most from you. By demonstrating autonomy in your own life, knowing how to control your emotions, you will teach your child to learn the same.

2. Reward good self-control. Set age-appropriate milestones and goals for your child to help them develop good self-control and reward them. This can in turn change boredom, making a bed or doing homework into a positive ‘goal’ so they are forced to fight against watching TV or playing with a smartphone. If the results are good, have a suitable reward to encourage the child to gradually adapt to cultivating willpower.

3. Teach your children to be “generous” with themselves. Tell them, “When we make mistakes, we don’t need to be devastated. Instead, identify where the mistake was and think about how we can do better the next day.”

4. The art of distraction. Teach your child how to distract themselves if they reach an uncontrollable or impulsive state, such as sitting still and taking a few deep breaths. If your child is angry and prone to outbursts, teach them how to exhaust themselves, such as rolling on the carpet or running into the backyard screaming until they calm down. Teaching your child how to deal with or calm down their anger will help them develop self-control.

5. As with adults, help children focus on developing the prefrontal cortex by engaging in regular exercise or activities that encourage concentration. For example, reading or completing puzzles. Yoga for children is also a great therapy that can equip children with self-awareness and self-control skills.
