CES 2017 witnessed the introduction of many self-driving car concepts, mobile devices, and convenient car applications.
1. Self-driving cars:Not all of the concept cars at CES 2017 have autonomous driving features, but the presence of many automakers shows that self-driving cars are the way of the future. There are basically three levels of autonomous vehicles. Level 5 cars are fully autonomous. That means the car doesn’t need a steering wheel or pedals. Level 4 cars are more practical, with features that communicate with traffic systems and traffic lights. In the next five years, level 3 autonomous cars will be able to drive themselves under certain conditions. These cars will require a driver to sit in and intervene when necessary. |
2. Digital assistant:Not only helping to drive instead of the driver, car manufacturers are also supporting drivers more with other control software. Users now tend to want to connect more easily in the car with virtual assistant software such as Siri, Alexa, Microsoft Cortana or Google Assistant. |
3. Applications and connections:Ford and Toyota have announced the creation of the SmartDeviceLink platform to support more devices and applications in cars. The alliance includes Mazda, Suzuki, Peugeot, and Subaru, along with suppliers such as Harman and QNX. With future standardized applications, drivers will be able to use their smartphones to lock and unlock doors, turn on the air conditioner, or check the fuel level. |
4. Electric vehicles:Many of the car concepts at CES 2017 were electric. Honda showed off its NeuV concept, which has a 20 kWh battery, wireless charging, and can even make you money. For those who prefer family cars, the Chrysler Portal EV Concept, with a 100 kWh battery and DC Fast Charging, is worth a look. Faraday Future also showed off a Tesla-defeating car with a 130 kWh battery and a 0-60 mph time of just 2.39 seconds. |
5. Mobile media:Automakers and startups seem to be turning to mobility. Hyundai introduced an exoskeleton that can help paraplegics walk. Honda introduced the Unicub, a smart personal mobility vehicle. |
