(500) Days of Summer is a romantic work with a non-linear chronological structure. Each scene is introduced by a card showing the date in the main male character's memory of his failed love affair with a girl named Summer.

The screenwriter, Scott Neustadter, said the film was based on his own true love. The character Summer was based on a girl he went to college with. The painful and terrible experience of a broken relationship prompted him to write the script.

When he received the script, director Marc Webb saw the film as a coming-of-age film rather than a comedy. "Most romantic comedies are more formulaic than emotional," he said. "With this story, I wanted it to be unsentimental and unsentimental. I wanted people to be able to dance with it. That's why there are parentheses around the number 500 in the title - it makes it sound like a pop song. This film isn't grand, it's not about war or poverty. It's about 500 days of love for a guy like any other. When your heart breaks for the first time, all the emotions consume you. That's the feeling I wanted this film to capture, before I forgot about it myself."
