6G lays the foundation for global smart mobile networks
6G promises speeds of 1 Tbps, ultra-low latency and the ability to connect tens of billions of devices, laying the foundation for global smart mobile networks.
Quick summary:
6G reaches 1 Tbps speed, 1 microsecond latency, supporting 40 billion IoT devices.
Using FR3 spectrum, integrating AI to optimize network resources.
MediaTek leads with AI modem, NR-NTN solution and UAC 3.0 security standard.
Europe is cautious, the US and China are proactively deploying and researching 6G.
6G: 2000 times faster than 5G
If 5G has changed the way the world connects, 6G will continue to push the boundaries with superior speed, reliability, and coverage. The standardization process for 6G officially begins in December 2023, when the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) will publish the standards framework and air interface, with the goal of completing the technical specification by the end of 2030.
3GPP is working with ITU-R WP 5D to develop detailed specifications for a new generation of networks that are not only faster but also smarter.

Outstanding features of 6G
Speed:Up to 1 Tbps, 2,000 times faster than current 5G speeds (100 - 500 Mbps).
Delay:Just 1 microsecond, 1,000 times faster than 5G's target.
Connect:Supports a huge number of IoT devices, forecasted to reach 40 billion devices by 2030.
Spectrum efficiency:AI optimization, leveraging higher 5G spectrum to increase network resource efficiency.
These factors will pave the way for applications like 3D telepresence, real-time task AI, and process monitoring that require instant feedback.
Core technology and why it matters
FR3 spectrum (7-24 GHz): Balance between coverage, capacity and high speed, supporting new applications without extreme transmission loss.
Satellite Support (NTN/D2D): Allows devices to connect directly to satellites, maintaining service anywhere.
AI & Machine Learning: From network traffic optimization, fraud detection to Agentic AI, software agents that automate, plan and handle complex tasks.

MediaTek: Preparing for the 6G Era
As the largest smartphone chip maker, MediaTek has been early in integrating AI into 5G modems, pioneering NTN connectivity and optimizing power consumption.
Notable changes:
AI in modem:Increase antenna efficiency by 3dB, increase throughput by 30%.
NR-NTN Solution:Successfully tested satellite broadband connection at MWC 2023.
UAC 3.0:Unified access control standards, more security with AI, advanced authentication and blockchain potential.
Global Perspective on 6G
Europe:Cautious investment, want 6G to be a software upgrade of 5G to reduce infrastructure costs.
China:Focus on practical applications, especially combining 6G with AI processing capabilities in the data center.
America:Widespread 5G SA deployment, T-Mobile shows enthusiasm for 6G, has nationwide 5G-Advanced coverage.
While there are still many unknowns, the foundation of 6G will revolve around NTN satellite networks, deeply integrated AI and energy-saving technology. MediaTek is leading in many key areas, ready for the new global mobile network standard.
