When a person sleepwalks, the part of the brain that produces complex behaviors is still working. But the part of the brain that stores memories and makes conscious decisions stops working, leaving them with no memory of what they did. During sleepwalking, human behavior is controlled by the part of the brain responsible for remembering movements. This explains why sleepwalkers only do things they have done before.
