7 foods that easily cause allergies

August 22, 2015 17:01

The foods we eat every day such as fish, eggs, and milk are often a health hazard for those with sensitive immune systems and allergies.

Food allergy is an abnormal reaction caused by the body's immune system. The most common foods that cause allergies are eggs, fish, cow's milk, nuts, seafood... because these foods are highly allergenic.

In addition to the inherent properties of food, processing and preservation are also factors that cause food allergens. People with sensitive constitutions or weak immune systems are susceptible to allergies caused by food allergens. In addition, food allergies have a high incidence in children, especially children under 3 years old.

1. Eggs

Egg allergy is common in children and most children outgrow the allergy by the age of 3. The majority of egg allergy proteins are found in egg whites, of which the three main ones are ovomucoid, ovalbumin and conalbumin.

Egg allergy usually manifests itself in the skin (dermatitis, hives) and digestive tract (abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting). The first skin reaction can appear just a few minutes after eating eggs, while digestive manifestations are often very different in terms of time of appearance, severity and duration. There are even cases of anaphylactic shock and respiratory reactions (difficulty breathing, coughing, asthma attacks) after eating eggs.

2. Fish

Fish allergies can cause serious reactions, including anaphylaxis, and are more common in adults, in areas where fish is commonly eaten. People with the allergy rarely outgrow the condition.

The main allergen in all fish is the protein parvalbumin. Therefore, people who react to one type of fish are often allergic to other fish. High temperatures during cooking do not destroy parvalbumin. Therefore, the only way to avoid an allergic reaction is to limit the consumption of this food.

3. Cow's milk

Cow's milk allergy is the most common allergy in children. About 2-7% of children under 1 year old are allergic to cow's milk.

Cow's milk allergy involves an immune response against one or both of two milk proteins: casein and whey protein. These proteins are also present in the milk of other mammals, so babies allergic to cow's milk are often also allergic to goat's milk and sheep's milk.

Cow's milk allergy often causes rash, hives, dermatitis, eczema, abdominal pain, digestive disorders, or difficulty breathing, asthma within the first hour after use. Severe allergies can cause anaphylactic shock, with a high risk of death. Cow's milk allergy increases the risk of allergies to other foods as well as nasal allergies. Up to 10% of children with cow's milk allergy will react to beef.

4. Nuts

Nuts such as chestnuts, cashews, almonds, walnuts, pistachios, peanuts... are considered the food group with the greatest potential to cause allergies, meaning that just a very small amount is enough to cause an allergic reaction.

About 0.5% of the population is allergic to these nuts, and the condition rarely goes away on its own. Children who are allergic to one tree nut are often also allergic to other tree nuts and may have cross-allergies to peanuts. Cashew allergies are thought to be more severe than peanut allergies.

Symptoms of an allergic reaction, mild cases may include rashes around the mouth or all over the body, abdominal pain, vomiting. More severe cases cause coughing, wheezing, difficulty breathing, hoarseness due to respiratory allergies. Very severe cases cause fainting, even anaphylactic shock leading to death.

5. Seafood

All types of seafood can cause allergies. However, species such as shrimp, crab, clams, mussels, and squid are more likely to cause allergies. There are two types of allergies: one is to crustaceans such as shrimp, crabs, etc., and the other is to mollusks such as clams, mussels, and oysters. Symptoms of seafood allergies include swelling of the body, difficulty breathing, abdominal pain, nausea, dizziness, etc.

People who are allergic to seafood should stay away from seafood processing areas because breathing in the fumes of this type of food can also cause an allergic reaction. Allergies can even occur if you share dishes... with other people that contain seafood.

6. Soybeans

Soy allergies usually develop in childhood and fade in adulthood. Symptoms of soy allergies are similar to those of milk allergies and include rashes, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and difficulty breathing. However, rarely, soy allergies can cause anaphylaxis.

Many people with soy allergies also have reactions to foods such as green beans, rye, and barley flour.

7. Wheat

Wheat allergy also occurs in children. It is often found in foods such as beer, noodles, soy sauce, etc. The cause of wheat allergy is gluten intolerance or gluten malabsorption syndrome (Celiac disease). Gluten intolerance causes severe intestinal symptoms, but does not cause intestinal damage like in Celiac disease. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, oats, barley, rye, etc.

Similar to other food allergies, if you see your body reacting when eating wheat, see your doctor for advice and choose a suitable diet for yourself.
