7 mistakes parents make that cause children to have respiratory infections in hot weather
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Tien Dung, Department of Pediatrics, Bach Mai Hospital pointed out harmful mistakes that cause children to be hospitalized for respiratory infections.
1. Using air conditioning incorrectly
If you come in from the street and immediately step into a cold room, you can easily get heat stroke. Especially children who play and exercise outdoors in high temperatures and immediately run into a room with low air conditioning will have difficulty adapting and are very susceptible to heat stroke.
In addition, many families turn on the air conditioner at a temperature that is too cold, which will cause children to have sore throats and rhinitis.
Therefore, parents must know how to control the temperature so that the baby does not get sick, so they should buy a thermometer instead of paying attention to the temperature on the air conditioner. Because the temperature of the air conditioner and the room also depends on the quality of the machine, the area, and the walls. However, the suitable temperature for children is from 26-32 degrees.
2. Drink ice water
Many children come home from school or play and look for ways to cool down, opening the refrigerator to find ice water to drink. This does not cool the child’s body, but can make the child’s heart beat irregularly, causing sore throat.
3. Eat yogurt, ice cream, cold fruit
Eating ice cream, yogurt, or cold fruit right out of the refrigerator can cause the body to suddenly become cold, causing sore throats and colds. Especially for young children who are still weak, they will be more susceptible to illness.
4. Bathing and washing hair while still sweaty
Many parents are subjective when their children come back from hot weather, their bodies are covered in sweat and they immediately take a bath. At that time, the body will feel comfortable and cool, but that is only temporary. If parents bathe their children when they are still sweaty, they can get heat shock and cold.
5. Participate in outdoor activities for long periods of time
Children are active but parents should pay attention to protect them. If the temperature outside is high, children should be kept indoors. Children should be chosen in a shady place with shade from trees for them to play outdoors.
6. Eat less green vegetables and fruits
Many children do not like to eat green vegetables and fruits, so they lack vitamins and minerals, reduce their resistance and are susceptible to respiratory infections. Therefore, parents should maintain a nutritious diet to increase their children's resistance.
7. Using antibiotics without permission
Many children have signs of sore throat, parents have arbitrarily bought antibiotics to use. This can make the disease worse. Because not all cases of acute sore throat require antibiotics. Most of the time when children have sore throat, rhinitis due to cold, due to change in weather, they do not need to use antibiotics. Using antibiotics must be prescribed by a doctor.
