8 Chinese officials suspended after coal mine explosion

China has suspended eight officials and detained two others after a coal mine accident in Yunnan province on December 5 that killed 17 people.

Xinhua News Agency quoted Chinese officials as saying: Among the eight people suspended from work are high-ranking officials in the coal industry.

Earlier, on December 5, an explosive device accidentally detonated, leading to a coal mine explosion in Fuyuan City, Yunnan Province, killing 17 coal miners. Police arrested two people immediately after the explosion. Each victim’s family was compensated 990,000 yuan, equivalent to 158,000 USD.

In August, a similar coal mine explosion in Sichuan province killed 26 miners. This is considered China's deadliest coal mine explosion this year./.
