The project to enhance traffic safety on national highways in Northern Vietnam, implemented by ODA capital worth 6,557 million yen (about 81 million USD) provided by the Japanese Government, was launched by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) on June 8 in Thai Nguyen province by breaking ground for packages 1 and 2 on National Highway 3 (Hanoi-Thai Nguyen).

The section from Hanoi to Thai Nguyen is part of a comprehensive traffic safety project covering four national highways (3, 5, 10, 18) and 10 provinces and cities in the northern region of Vietnam. The project aims to reduce the number of traffic accidents and damage on the project routes. The project is scheduled to be implemented in five and a half years.

Activities carried out within the project scope include construction, installation of lighting and signals, improving traffic compliance… Traffic safety education and raising awareness of traffic safety for local people and road users are also among the activities of this project.

Package 1 has a total value of 925 million yen, including upgrading the section from km 0-km 67 and from km 50+900-km 56+600. Package 2, upgrading the section from km 56+600-km 63+200, has a total value of 975 million yen. It is expected that both packages will be implemented within 19 months.

Enhancing traffic safety has been one of the highest priorities in JICA’s assistance activities to Vietnam in recent years. In parallel with providing funding for transport infrastructure development, JICA has also worked closely with Vietnamese partners to initiate and implement technical cooperation projects related to traffic safety.
