Noon April 15,A group of 6th grade students from Nghia Ha Secondary School went to Tra Khuc River - a section belonging to Thanh Khiet village, Nghia Ha commune, Quang Ngai city - to play.Later, people heard cries for help but when they arrived, the large group of students had already sunk underwater.Police and rescue workers later found nine bodies.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Le Van Nhat - Deputy Chief of Quang Ngai City Police, the students who were injured went to school early this afternoon and then stopped by the river to bathe before going to school.LThere was an accident in Australia with 11 students, including 2 girls on the shore.

Mr. Nhat said the area where the children were bathing was about 2 meters deep, it was a river but there was a road for trucks to get sand so the water flow was quite weak, almost stagnant. At first the children were bathing in a shallow area, then they moved to this area and the accident happened.

"These students said that among the nine of them, some knew how to swim, so we still haven't determined why they all had an accident like that. We cannot rule out the possibility that they saved each other when they drowned," Mr. Nhat said.

According to local residents, this afternoon, a woman who was herding her cows saw a group of students swimming in a dangerous area and told them to get to shore, but they refused to listen and left. "Many people have drowned in this section of the river before," said local residents.
