9 bad habits that are ruining your face

Ha An November 25, 2024 12:11

Habits like touching your face, resting your chin on your hand, using a straw, breathing through your mouth, and chewing on one side can all negatively affect your facial appearance in the long run.

Below, Dr. Huynh Tan Vu, Specialist II - University Medical Center of Ho Chi Minh City, Branch 3, points out some bad habits that ruin the appearance of each of us:

- Raise your hand to your face

Our hands come into contact with many objects in our daily lives and work. Therefore, they are not as clean as we think and contain a lot of bacteria. The habit of frequently touching your face with your hands will prevent your skin from being clean, which makes it more prone to acne and worsens existing acne.

ButRest your chin on your hand.

Resting your chin on your hand for extended periods can affect the jawbone and blood circulation. It can cause the chin to become misaligned and accelerate aging of the skin in the chin area. Prolonged chin rest on one side can also deform and unbalance the face.

ButBring the instrument to your mouth.

We are forced to purse our lips when sipping drinks through a straw, which indirectly forms wrinkles around the mouth. The same thing happens with smoking cigarettes.

Improper facial hygiene, using unclean face towels, and sharing towels are some of the most common mistakes people make, leading to acne, facial infections, fungal skin infections, and the spread of various skin diseases.

- Sleeping position

The reason wrinkles appear on the cheeks and chin is because your face is pressed against the pillow while you sleep on your side. Regularly sleeping on one side can cause one side of the face to appear larger than the other because the muscle groups on the side you are sleeping on are compressed.

Experts recommend that sleeping on your back is the best position to maintain a youthful appearance, freshness, and a relaxed mind.

Sleeping on your stomach is also an unscientific sleeping position. Sleeping on your stomach can alter the shape of your face, causing the bridge of your nose to be crooked and the corners of your mouth to be asymmetrical, making it easier for wrinkles to form around one side of your mouth.

- Using phones and computers continuously for many hours.

In today's technological age, people tend to use electronic devices for work and entertainment frequently. This not only damages the eyes but also leads to unforeseen harm to the skin.

Numerous studies indicate that when blue light penetrates the skin, reactive oxygen species are formed, leading to DNA damage and exacerbating skin problems such as melasma and discoloration.

Besides increasing skin pigmentation, blue light also disrupts the body's natural circadian rhythm, causing insomnia, fatigue, and stress. This is a major reason why acne scars are even harder to heal.

In addition, close contact with phone screens stimulates the production of free radicals in the skin, breaking down collagen, causing the skin to lose its natural elasticity, accelerating the aging process, and leading to the formation of wrinkles.

ButBreathe through your mouth.

When exercising quickly and vigorously, we may have to breathe through our mouths. This is a natural bodily reaction to expel more CO2, after which breathing returns to normal. However, if mouth breathing becomes a habit, it can make your face appear longer, your jawline recessed, your nose droop, and so on.

ButChewing habit

Most people have a habit of chewing on only one side, but it's best to develop the habit of chewing on both sides. Chewing on only one side for a long time can lead to facial asymmetry. This is also not good for your jaw health.

ButChatter

Constantly grinding teeth while sleeping or talking can alter facial structure. Excessive teeth grinding can enlarge the jaw muscles, widen the cheeks, and make the face look unnatural and unbalanced.

- Improper use of facial muscles

Some people often raise or furrow their eyebrows to express surprise. If this action happens too frequently and repeatedly over a long period, it can affect the facial muscles and may create many horizontal wrinkles on the forehead.

Laughing excessively and too much can also create more crow's feet around the temples.
