VNPT is planning to invest in a new submarine fiber optic cable (APG), while Viettel is also adding capacity via the Asia-Pacific submarine fiber optic cable.

Since the beginning of the year, the AAG fiber optic cable has been repeatedly disrupted, causing losses to users and businesses in the country. Consequently, network operators have had to consider additional solutions to retain customers.

According to Tien Phong newspaper, citing information from a representative of Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Group (VNPT), the group had a plan to invest in a new submarine fiber optic cable line, APG (Asia Pacific Gateway), in 2016 to reduce its dependence on AAG.

Once operational, this cable line will provide broadband services while ensuring system security.

Meanwhile, Viettel, the military telecommunications group, is also planning to add more capacity via the Inter-Asia (IA) submarine fiber optic cable and land-based routes, even though this network only receives 30% of its international internet traffic through the AAG fiber optic cable.

After numerous malfunctions, network operators are considering reducing their reliance on the AAG fiber optic cable.

Since becoming operational in 2009, the AAG international undersea fiber optic cable has experienced more than 10 incidents. Each time a cable break occurs, all domestic access to foreign services such as Facebook, Gmail, YouTube, etc., is disrupted, or even completely blocked.

Domestic internet service providers estimate that fiber optic cable breaks in 2014 caused a 40% loss in international traffic.

In Vietnam, AAG remains the main connection route carrying the majority of international traffic. In addition, domestic network operators such as VNPT, Viettel, FPT, etc., also lease other large cable routes such as SMW 3 (connecting Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Western Europe) and APG (connecting Asia-Pacific countries).
