AFC has just revealed that the 2018 AFC U23 Championship in China broke records in the history of television coverage and participation from media and social networks in Vietnam when coach Park Hang Seo and his team met Uzbekistan in the final match on January 27.
According to data from CSM Media Research and KantarMedia Vietnam, more than 5.3 million people out of 11.4 million in Vietnam watched the final on television. This made the AFC U23 Championship one of the most watched television programs in recent years. The final match accounted for 77% of the program share watched in Vietnam, meaning that 3 out of 4 Vietnamese TV viewers that afternoon chose to watch the final.
During the tournament, the AFC Facebook page achieved an impressive number of over 11 million views and nearly 17 million video views in Vietnam. This means that over 150,000 hours of Vietnamese fans spent watching videos about the AFC U23 Championship. On the AFC YouTube channel, the effect was equally positive with over 4 million Vietnamese fans watching 6.5 million minutes.

The Asian Football Confederation’s Secretary General, Dato’ Windsor John, told The-AFC.com: “The breakthrough on Vietnamese television and social media underlines the enduring appeal of football in this region. Look at the Vietnamese fans who poured onto the streets to welcome their heroes home, the red-covered matches and the passion of the Vietnamese fans, which is the pride of all Asian football.”
The AFC also gave special praise to the Vietnam Football Federation for their progress and efforts in development at all levels.
