Egypt holds OIC presidency for the first time

The 12th summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) officially opened this afternoon, February 6, in the Egyptian capital Cairo, with the agenda being the war situation in Syria and the fight against Islamic rebels in Mali.

The conference brought together heads of state from 27 of the 57 OIC member states, including the Presidents of Iran and Türkiye. The remaining member states sent high-ranking officials to attend.

Senegalese President Macky Sall opened the conference and delivered his final speech before handing over the rotating OIC presidency to Egypt's first Islamist leader, President Mohamed Morsi.

According to Egypt's official MENA news agency, this conference is expected to adopt the "Cairo Declaration" on the stance of member countries on international, regional and national issues.

Since the OIC was established in 1969, this is the first year Egypt has held the presidency of this organization./.
