There are many stories by the Brothers Grimm that are loved by children around the world until today, such as Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs... |
According to Wikipedia, Jacob (1785-1863) and Wilhelm Grimm (1786-1859) were two brothers born into a large family in Germany. Living in relatively difficult conditions (which later had some influence on the plots in the stories they collected), the two brothers still tried to study and the field they pursued was linguistics. In 1807, the Grimm brothers began collecting unpublished folk tales. In 1812, they published their first collection of 86 fairy tales under the name Children's and Household Stories. In the 7th edition, the last edition while the Grimm brothers were still alive, the number of stories reached 211.
As linguists, the Brothers Grimm wanted to use fairy tales to learn about the elements that make up language in ancient literature. Besides, they also wanted to preserve the ancient German culture and find ways to bring meaningful entertaining stories to children. Because of this great contribution, the image of the Brothers Grimm was put on the 1000 German Mark coin in 1992.
Today, Grimm's fairy tales are one of the best-selling books for children. Not only that, Grimm's fairy tales also bring simple and humane lessons to adults. In 2005, the film The Brothers Grimm was produced with Matt Damon as Wilhelm and Heath Ledger as Jacob. The film was a huge success and brought the producer a net profit of more than 100 million USD. Animation studios have also used many images of princes and princesses in Grimm's fairy tales to create animated films about Snow White, the Frog Prince, and Cinderella.
Not only that, Grimm's fairy tales also have a great influence on other art forms, such as painting and music. The touching story of Hansel and Grettel was the subject for Secret Garden to create their second album, "White Stones". In the story, Hansel and Grettel used white stones as guides to return home every time they were abandoned by their stepmother in the forest, and Secret Garden wanted music to be like white stones to guide listeners back to their inner state of balance, silence and peace. It can be said that humanity and children would lack a lot without the fairy tale images collected by the Grimm brothers.
