Al Jazeera: Assad seeks political asylum in Venezuela

December 28, 2012 10:37

On December 27, the Arab television channel Al Jazeera cited Turkish diplomatic sources as reporting that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had discussed with Venezuelan authorities the possibility of facilitating asylum for him and his family in this South American country.

Al Jazeera said that Turkish Embassy staff in Venezuela's capital Caracas received information from Venezuela's Foreign Ministry representative about Mr. Assad's request for political asylum in the country.

In late October 2012, Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Miqdad delivered a personal message from Assad to Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

Mr. Miqdad did not reveal the content of the message and only said that the letter was related to the relationship between the two presidents./.
