India: anti-corruption protests
On August 17, tens of thousands of Indians poured into the streets of the capital New Delhi to support social activist Anna Hazare's hunger strike in prison to fight corruption in India.
According to AFP, 60,000-70,000 people, young and old, women and men, students, workers, civil servants, retirees... marched in the center of New Delhi. "We have finally brought the issue of anti-corruption to the streets of India - said KC Malhotra, professor of history at Delhi University - Indians are uniting for change". Many protesters affirmed that it was time to stop corruption from destroying the entire Indian social system.

According to the Hindustan Times, on the same day, a series of protests also broke out in many other cities in India, including the financial center of Mumbai and the southern port city of Chennai.
Social activist Anna Hazare had planned to go on an indefinite hunger strike in a New Delhi park to protest against the government’s introduction of a weak anti-corruption bill in parliament. Delhi authorities arrested him on August 16 and sent him to Tihar jail, where he has been on hunger strike since.
Recently, a series of corruption cases worth tens of billions of dollars have occurred, causing shock to Indian society.
