The computer was manufactured under a contract between the Indian Government and the UK-based company DataWind to make this modern device accessible to all Indian students.
As planned, the Askash computer will officially go on sale in the market from next November at a price of 2,999 rupees (equivalent to 60 USD). At this price, customers will not be exempted from taxes or subsidies. However, the Indian government said it will ask DataWind to reduce the selling price to 2,250 rupees (about 39 USD) for students with a 12-month warranty.
