Indian Prime Minister Modi's invitation to his Pakistani counterpart Sharif and several other South Asian leaders to attend his inauguration ceremony on May 26 was seen as a historic move, demonstrating Modi's determination to play a more prominent role in the region and internationally.

Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said that his bilateral meeting with Mr. Modi yesterday was a historic opportunity to "turn a new page" in relations between the two countries.

“We have agreed that our foreign ministers will meet soon to review and work out a bilateral agenda in the spirit of this meeting,” Sharif said after the meeting, which lasted nearly an hour. “We have a common agenda of economic development and recovery, which we cannot achieve without peace and stability in the region. I urge us to move away from the instability and insecurity that have plagued us for decades.”

India and Pakistan have fought three wars since 1947, and Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Modi himself are said to have a hardline conservative stance on national security, which is closely linked to relations with Pakistan. However, Modi is proving the opposite right after taking office./.
